简介
Carrie Day is an Edmonton, Alberta based singer-songwriter, who has gained a reputation for her poetic lyrics that weave a tapestry of emotions which speak of what it is to be human. In her fourth full length album, Life is Like This, Day serves as an omniscient narrator who witnesses heartache, but ardently refuses to jump ship and abandon those suffering. Day states that this album “was written during a period of observing an aching humanity, and the universality of suffering. It's a small offering of hope and guidance; friendship and love, and simply the message of 'you are not alone; or rather, we are not alone'.” When asked which songs on Life is Like This are dearest to her, Day first speaks of “Love Just the Same”; a piano ballade written in the classical form of “art song”, that tells the story of two lost souls finding comfort in a starry night. This song contains a richly layered 5-part cello arrangement, composed by Ms. Day. The second song she speaks of is the title track, “Life is Like This”, which was written when Day was working through a difficult emotional time. “I remember feeling that my vision was clouded by the hurt I was carrying with me. One day, life looked refreshingly different; something about the way the sunlight and the horizon line caught my eye; it sort of woke me up and shook me out of my sadness. Of course, I had to write about it!” Day offers this self-appraisal on her latest album: “Life is Like This is a collection of songs that speak from the heart to the heart, and explore subjects of universal love, friendship and togetherness. With some of the songs, I've gone in a cinematic direction, with the use of strings and both adult and children's choirs. Other songs take on a more radio-ready route, incorporating catchy beats and pop stylings.” Recorded at Sound Extractor Studios under the direction of producer, Stew Kirkwood, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts project, Life is Like This, raises the bar on Day's previous recordings. “I was much more relaxed in the studio this time. I had many ideas running around in my mind's ear, and when the ideas were not there, I knew that I could trust my producer, Stew, to fill in the blanks. He's amazing. It's as though he knows exactly what sound should be in what place. Recording was quite a magical experience this time around.” In reflecting on why this sort of album, and why now, Ms. Day muses, “I wanted to create something that carries some sort of gravity; some sort of weighty meaningfulness and magnitude of purpose; something captured in a moment that might also have some qualities of timelessness.”
