Former Oklahoma Cityan Stephen Petree has traded Shiny Toy Guns for a telekeyster and a band of his own — called Petree, of course — and released a debut album, "Weakness Makes You Beautiful,” that takes his former band’s synth-pop and electro-rhythms to lofty new dance floor levels. Advertisement Tele-whatchamacallit, you ask? It’s a one-of-a-kind guitar/keyboard instrument created by Petree bass player David Eropkin, whose day job is audio engineer/inventor. Its sound is at turns sci-fi eerie and electrically alluring on such instrumentally multifaceted, harmony-layered, infectiously beat-driven numbers as "She Set It” (featuring guest guitarist Ronkat Spearman of the P Funk Allstars), "Come Get It Now” and "Stars Tipped Over” (with guitarist brother Chad Petree of Shiny Toy Guns adding a sharp, shiny metal edge to the proceedings). Another Toy Gun, Sisely Treasure, adds an extra dimension of vocal beauty to the emotional tower of congas-and-keyboards power-balladry that is "I Can’t Wait,” and Petree’s cosmic cover of Jesus Jones’ 1991 alternative dance classic "Right Here, Right Now,” briefly spotlighting a blistering guitar solo from Aaron Joseph, is nothing short of stunning, actually improving on the original. A local boy has made very good here, and if this first studio outing is any indication, Petree’s live performance at 9 p.m. Saturday at VZD’s, 4200 N Western, is not to be missed.
