简介
I have always been influenced by many voices; different languages, cultures and genres of music all speak to me. Even though my first three cds are about very different places, they are also about anywhere, about finding a home in your heart. There has been an odd collection of voices in my head inspiring the songs. Imagine Billie Holliday, Kate Wolf, Norah Jones, Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, Andrés Segovia, Jimmy Hendrix, James Taylor, Buddy Hollie, Mississippi John Hurt, Led Zeppelin, Judy Collins, Carlos Santana, Van Morrison, Linda Ronstadt, Tom Waite, Carrie Newcomer, Neil Young and many, many others in a room together. Yet it is not a room, but the remote high country of the Colorado Rockies, “where the air is thin, where the mountains sigh and the rivers begin…” This is where a diverse group of people finds community and where my songs find me. With the backdrop of the “mystical sound of silence on high” and the undeveloped open space “where untamed songs run free”, the voices in my head settle and listen and the stories come to life. I am eternally indebted to all the music out there and grateful for places like Badger Creek where the music in here can find its way out. Past musical projects have been somewhat random and free floating. Years of casual folk, classical guitar, love for the blues, occasional trysts with jazz, love of languages, passion for Latin music and dance, world music and an easily moved heart have all contributed to wherever I land next. I’ve been lucky to have some fine musicians join me along the way. Some recent projects have been: 2010 Kantika nobo – a cd about my experiences on Curaçao, an island in the southern Caribbean, and its Creole language, Papiamentu. The songs are in Papiamentu (with one in English and one in Portuguese) and are dedicated to celebrating that language. 2012 Kathy Taylor –Dreams (Sueños) – a short video by Wilmer Chavarría of a song I wrote with the words of a poem by Pablo Neruda. (YouTube) (Poem LVIII by Pablo Neruda, El libro de las preguntas, music and translation by Kathy Taylor) 2013 Babelegría - another video by Wilmer Chavarría of a song I wrote in 5 languages, performed with some of my students at Earlham College. (YouTube) It celebrates the joy of diversity through language. 2013 Badger Creek - a cd about life in a remote “off the grid” community in the Colorado Rockies, its characters and natural beauty. As described above, our mountain home is where I have written many of my songs. A mixture of home grown folk, blues, country, alternative music with a mountain flavor. 2013 Badger Creek - (single) about the peace and beauty of living in the high country, so close to the sky, and life's simple blessings. 2013 Grace - (single) a song about transformation from the emptiness of the solitude of loneliness to the fullness of the solitude of openness in the high mountains. 2013 The Mystery Waltz - (single) a mystical country waltz about life, decisions and the next step. 2014 Love Isn’t Easy – (single) a jazz-blues love song about separation and return. 2014 My Madushi and Me - (YouTube) a duet with my then 7 year old granddaughter. I write a song for her birthday every year and this one was for her 7th birthday. “Madushi” is a Papiamentu word for “grandma” and is what Greta has called me her whole life. Song with slide show. 2015 In the Inbetween – a cd about change; the multiplicity of identity as we travel, grow, face challenges, love and let go. Mixture of jazzy folk, blues, bluegrass, and in-between genres, even the music often isn’t sure what it is! Many of these songs have been written and recorded in our mountain home as well. 2017 Passing Moments - a collection of soulful acoustic songs about life's moments, whether the passing of a dear friend or beloved pet, an anniversary, the flight of a hummingbird, a song of forgiveness, a traditional Navajo song about connection to the earth, an instrumental about the Colorado sky, love of the mountains, a girl's birthday. 2017 Amor de palabras - a variety of songs and genres, mostly in Spanish with one song in Portuguese, one in English and one in Papiamentu. The focus is on a love of words and words of love in poetry, wordplay and irony, rhythm and dance. A mixture of moods and rhythms, passion and meditation, all celebrating the power and beauty of words.
