Kerfuffle专辑介绍:by Chris NicksonFrom the quality of the playing it's hard to believe that the four musicians who make up Kerfuffle aren't even 20; they're certainly a precocious bunch — this is their third album. It's an excellent achievement, with remarkable technique. But there's more than technical ability on show, there's also plenty of personality. Whether on traditional material or more contemporary tunes there's great vigor and pleasure in the playing, with arrangements that work to their considerable strengths. Accordion player Hannah James (who also sings) and fiddler Sam Sweeney are the front people, but it wouldn't work without guitarist Chris Thornton-Smith and bassist Tom Sweeney, who do more than fill out the sound, they're a vital part of it. All four have been immersed in folk music all their lives, and it shows in the natural feel they have for a piece like "Bold" or the "Twisted" set (recorded live, just to show they can cut it on-stage, too), which devolves into a breakdown of percussion and clog dancing. James is a good if not great singer, one whose voice will develop in years to come, although she does a very credible job on "Searching for Lambs" and "The Lark in the Clear Air." Perhaps the only misstep is to include "Light Flight," one of Pentangle's signature songs and so closely associated with them that any other version is bound to sound wrong. Other than that, this is a superb CD from a band with a glorious future ahead of them.
