Serene was a melodic emo band from Gävle, Sweden. Unfortunately, they only released one album and a split 7"/MCD prior to calling it quits. Now when I say "emo" I'm not referring to the contemporary meaning, quite the contrary. This is pure 90's style emo without any bullshit. I was only 15 years old when I first heard "Inward Flowering" and I remember how I immediately got caught by the way that these kids delivered their message. I had never heard an album that was as naked, brutally honest and at the same time so powerful and raw. You can almost touch the anxiety when the album is being played. Lyric wise "Inward Flowering" deals with different subjects ranging from childhood trauma to heartfelt friendship. The lyrics are beautifully backed up with very melodic guitar work, smart bass lines and hard hitting drums. This album is since long out of press but you might find it in a dusty bin at your local record store with some luck.
