简介
Hemphill & Co. now releases Tribute, an album in memory of Lené Newkirk, the feature vocalist. Released exactly 8 years after his death (October 2004), Tribute showcases the unique versatility of this artist with the sweet, clear voice. Tribute is the culmination of a promise made by music producer and lyricist Brian K. Hemphill of Hemphill & Co. to his great friend Lené to showcase his immense vocal abilities through a collection of well-written and diverse songs. This promise is now fulfilled with this eclectic collection of musical gems which represents years of collaboration with this phenomenally gifted vocalist. Prepare yourself for a marvelous listening journey which crosses musical boundaries to explore issues of the heart, mind, and spirit. When asked why it has taken so long to release this album, Brian readily admits revisiting many of the songs was painful. However, after spending eight years authoring a book entitled "The Elements of Creative and Expressive Artistry: A Philosophy for Creating Everything Artistic," Brian renewed his vigor to reengage in music. Tribute is a witty and inventive collection of 11 songs, that even when dealing with serious themes like child abuse, shattered dreams, nuclear proliferation, or racism, manages to maintain its melodic sensibilities. Lené's voice brilliantly expresses the unique narrative of each song. Some of the musical influences on Tribute include hiphop, rock, r&b, jazz, new age, blues, classical, latin, and dance--all cooked up in a spicy pop pastry. Here a summary description of the album tracks: “Deja’s Dance” - an energetic pop R&B dance ballad “Cruisin’ (Overdrive)” - The doo-wop hip hop influences of this track pays tribute to both the East and West Coast “Daggers & Lace” - a rock-inspired cautionary tale “Insane” - wacky vocals and harmonies play amid hip pop grunge on this humorous song that kicks some pretty serious knowledge “More Than Lovers” - a fusion of blues vocals, African drums, and metal guitar “Act Like You Know” - a Latin-influenced R&B song “Magic Touch” - sweet duet harmonies frollick on this late 60s, early 70s-R&B inspired love ballad “Secrets and Lies” - a classical-inspired R&B tune “Where Are All the Children” - a hip hop inspired anthem decrying the ills of child abuse "You Are, You Are" - a jazz, new age-influenced tender love ballad “Keep Dancing in the Sun” - inspirational sermonizing on a poppy dance track (extended mix and short mix)
