Piperville Wow. Live jazz. Lynn Seaton. Jeff Hamilton. And little ole me!? Ok, so strike the little part. It’s Friday night, November 11th and there’s a 90th Floor tribute concert going on. The Brian Piper Trio takes the stage in 20 minutes. That’s me, Brian Piper. But first, a little background: Lynn Seaton and I had been playing together for several years since he moved into the Dallas area, and I had approached him about putting together a trio. That’s where Jeff came in. Actually, it was a barbecue joint in California. Bruce Collier had already talked to “The Hammer” as Jeff is known in jazzdom. Jeff and I discussed the project, talked with Lynn and Voila!. At about the same time, I was resurrecting the original 90th Floor catalog created by Bruce, to be re-released on CD. It all came together nicely and, like the 90th Floor motto implies, the past is meeting the future! It’s too cool to be a part of it. Jazz is “performance” art. Playing in front of an audience, live and in person brings out things that sometimes never happen in the studio. I don’t think we played one tune from beginning to end until the concert Friday night. So the first tune out of the chutes would be jumping into the proverbial frying pan! Words can’t quite express the mix of feelings I had after taking the stage. But imagine taking a ride on the front grill of a speeding freight train through Disneyland on a hot summer day with your ears pinned to the boiler, stark naked, and you’ll come close!
