ABOUT COMIN' HOME From longing, loving, and searching...to strength, hope, and wisdom, Comin' Home has eleven songs of inspiration and encouragement. Maya's old favorites have been remastered to bring you the sweetness of her heart warming, foot tapping folk-rock. These are Maya's songs from the journey, tunes that have stirred the spirit of many. Red Bandana Blues is a song to dance away your blues and get you seeing a brighter way of looking at life. Strength of the Bear connects you to the Earth and the spirits of nature that are always available. Ageless Beauty reminds you of the inner beauty that goes beyond what we see in the mirror. Full Moon sings out to the moon, longing to expand in freedom and love. Maya sings the vocals with rich layers of her own harmonies. She plays guitar and is joined by guest musicians playing violin (Maui's Don Lax), mandolin (Klesmer favorite, Steve Mixon), guitar (Daniel Thomas), drums, harmonica and flute (Rich Hensolt). Let your spirit soar and your body move, as you journey home. INTRODUCING MAYA There is always more to a musician.... there is always a story that brings us to our music. Maya is no different. Her passion for music has been with her as far back as she can remember. She sang all through school, taking piano lessons, voice lessons, and bought her first guitar at fourteen. With mentors like Peter, Paul, & Mary, Bob Dylan, Buffy Saint Marie, Melanie, and later Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne, she needed more than the classical music from her lessons and the choral music at school. She started composing simple folk songs. She loved composing, so she majored in music at Michigan State. There she was, in the tiny closet in the lonely basement of the music building: hours of opera, listening to intervals on tape and writing piano pieces according to composition rules. That was when she decided to become a SPIRIT SINGER. She wanted to sing the songs of her heart. They were the sounds of a spirit-child starting to remember. Songs that didn't always follow the "rules." She shifted into singing and playing music with people outside of the music department. They would get wild and creative, drumming on kitchenware and improvising on calls for freedom and connection. She learned popular songs that people could sing along with, but her personal aliveness was with the songs that emerged from within her. Songs that reminded her of who she was becoming and who she really was. After college and a brief teaching career, she joined the "back to the land" movement. There she had many opportunities to write music and share songs. The campfire was a place of council and celebration during experiments in living with nature. Singing in her tipi by the pond with twenty close friends was a rich and fertile place for song writing. There is inspiration in sitting under a giant oak tree with frogs droning in the background. Eventually she returned to the paved world and raised her daughter. To make a living, she taught elementary school and sang with children every day. She worked on her own songs at night. Her songs were the constant friends that gave her creative energy, encouraged her to live an authentic life, and continued to make her feel alive. They were the lyrics and tunes that kept saying, "continue to go deeper, don't give up, there is much to remember and much to share." In 1993 after performing in small venues like coffee houses, wineries, healing fairs, and new thought churches, she left teaching and recorded Comin' Home. With her cassette in hand, the floodgates opened and she traveled the world writing songs and poetry. She performed in many places around the world: Alaska, Thailand, Budapest, South America, the San Francisco Whole Earth Festival, Goddess Festivals in the Monterey Bay area, and two Denver Coaching Expos. She was the vocalist for "The Hero's Journey" at the Buck Minster Fuller Amphitheater in Bali. While singing her heart songs, she met her current musical partner, Sage. Maya and Sage, together, have dedicated their lives to Spirit Singing. This magical couple is recording their first joint album and will be sharing the new sound and songs in 2004 (You can hear a few preview clips on their website www.mayasage.com.) Through their heart-rock they inspire people to joyfully celebrate life ~ to sing and to dance! Sometimes a gentle cosmic rock that makes you tickle and tingle, sometimes a rhythmic groove with expansive lyrics that transport you into a dancing love-trance. This is radiant music of remembering, remembering who we truly are. Comin' Home is the beginning.... and there is no end. Come on along!
