We started writing and recording this bunch of songs in late 2009. Of course, Jimmy did the heavy lifting in terms of songwriting, and playing most of the instruments himself. But I had a great time and learned a lot recording this project – I never would have thought I’d be playing the Hammond organ, the sitar or the ukulele, but I did. Jimmy had recently found a Hammond M3 and the much-coveted Leslie speaker and we had a blast working out cool parts. Around this time we were also listening to and inspired by a lot of Brazilian music – first and foremost, Céu, and later bossa nova, tropicalia and Os Mutantes. We liked what a bossa nova-type guitar brought to the mix, and I found the vocals inspiring too. Jimmy bought me a ukulele for Christmas that year, and you can hear it in several songs also. A bit later, on a trip to California we made a trip to the Ali Akbar store in San Rafael to look at sitars and another inspiration took hold. We’ve used the sitar in a pretty ‘pop’ way but there’s definitely an Indian influence there, not to mention an ancient Sanskrit mantra. These songs really reflect our eclectic influences and interests. We hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed recording them.
