Part I presents early Italian vocal works. I am incredibly humbled and grateful for my friendship with one of the leading vocal coaches in the country, Mr. Tedrin Blair Lindsay. The idea for these two recording sessions was to mimic that of a vocal coaching. Little editing was done, quite a few tracks are single takes, in keeping with the theme of simply capturing this event. I hope you enjoy the product as much as i enjoyed the process. Recorded in the Recital Hall of the Singletary Center for the Arts in Lexington, KY May 12-13, 2014. Bradley Kerns recently joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky in the fall of 2011. He maintains a versatile performing and teaching schedule and is a grammy-nominated recording artist. As a trombonist, Brad has performed on multiple occasions at the Eastern Trombone Workshop, the International Trombone Festival, the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, the Great American Brass Band Festival, and the Jazz Education Network Conference. He currently can be heard as split lead/solo trombone in the DiMartino/Osland Jazz Orchestra and the Kentucky Jazz Repertory Orchestra, principal trombone in the Lexington Brass Band, as well as trombonist in the nationally-based Brass Initiative Ensemble and the University of Kentucky Faculty Brass Quintet. As an educator, Brad has given performances and masterclasses at the Conservatorio Pernambucano de Musica (Recife, Brazil), the Moscow Conservatory, the St. Petersburg Academy of Music, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas State University, Morehead State University, Eastern Kentucky University, and Appalachian State University to name a few. He has also taught trombone at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, Asbury University, and the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts, as well as served as Director of Bands within the Catholic Diocese of Lexington. Brad has been involved in nearly twenty recording projects under multiple recording labels and has performed for programs such as National Geographic, the BBC England and WRFL Lexington. His recently released solo recording, Rising Sun, is largely a collection of new arrangements, transcriptions, and contemporary works for trombone. He can also be heard on the Momus Trombone Quartets debut album, The Lexingport Project, which remains one of the top-selling trombone quartet albums in the world. As a soloist, Brad recently gave the Kentucky premiere of John Mackey’s Harvest: Concerto for Trombone with the University of Kentucky Wind Ensemble in the fall of 2011 and the world premiere and commission of Anthony Barfield's Red Sky in the fall of 2012. The 2012-2013 year also included solo performances at the KMEA, TMEA, OMEA, Dia T (Recife, Brazil) and JEN Conferences. Brad commissioned and performed Raleigh Dailey’s Conversations for Trombone and Piano at the 2013 Eastern Trombone Workshop and performed in recital with Dr. Dailey the 2013 International Trombone Festival in Columbus, GA. Professor Kerns received a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the University of Kentucky while studying with Dale Warren and a Master of Music Degree from Boston University while studying with Scott Hartman. Brad is an S.E. Shires and Pickett Brass Performing Artist. He currently resides in Nicholasville, Kentucky with his wife, Katie, their two sons, Charley and Simon, and an overly-energetic Australian Shepherd, Sydney. Tedrin Blair Lindsay, pianist and musicologist, was raised in Rome, Italy and has been a professional accompanist since the age of ten. He performs well over one hundred concerts annually, boasting a huge repertoire of vocal and instrumental chamber works, and of his own virtuosic compositions and arrangements for both piano and voices with orchestra. Dr. Lindsay is presently on the opera faculty at the University of Kentucky, where he works as vocal coach and musical director. His UK productions have included Aaron Copland’s The Tender Land, Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, Gian Carlo Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors, André Previn’s A Streetcar Named Desire, Rachel Portman’s The Little Prince, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel, Thomas Pasatieri’s The Hotel Casablanca (which he also musical directed for the Seagle Music Colony in July 2009), the world premiere of Joseph Baber’s River of Time, and eleven incarnations of UK’s annual Broadway revue It’s a Grand Night for Singing. Of these productions, two have been released as studio recordings on the Albany label, The Tender Land and The Hotel Casablanca, and the National Opera Association honored The Little Prince as Best Opera Production for 2004-2005. Dr. Lindsay also teaches the popular Lexington Opera Society Lecture Series, and for many years has entertained during the intermission feature for the Metropolitan Opera Council Auditions at both the district and regional levels. In 2007, he played in Carnegie Hall with Arlo Guthrie and the UK Symphony, in 2009 he performed in the celebration Our Lincoln at the Kennedy Center, and in 2010, he played in both the opening and closing ceremonies of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. In December 2010, he participated as vocal director and orchestral pianist for the world premiere of Pasatieri’s God Bless Us Every One at Dicapo Opera in New York City, and for the subsequent recording on the Albany label. In addition to all these activities, Dr. Lindsay is a music and theatre critic for the Lexington Herald-Leader. While in Kentucky, Dr. Lindsay has collaborated several times with Actors’ Guild of Lexington – as award-winning musical director for Sondheim’s Assassins and William Finn’s Falsettos, and as composer of an elaborate score for Angels in America: Perestroika by Tony Kushner. Additionally, he performs throughout Europe and North America several times a year as pianist with the American Spiritual Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Everett McCorvey, and is on the board of that organization. Dr. Lindsay has also worked with such New York companies as Bel Canto Opera, Golden Fleece Opera, Westchester Opera, Rockwell Productions, and the off-Broadway Lamb’s Theatre Company. In the early 1990s, he traveled as musical director of the first two national tours of Randy Courts and Mark St. Germain’s The Gifts of the Magi, and another national tour of Roger Miller’s Big River. Additionally, he has performed as an actor in select roles, including John Merrick in The Elephant Man, Axel in The Nerd, Steven Kodaly in She Loves Me, and a small featured role in Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1978 film Luna. Dr. Lindsay earned a Ph.D. in Musicology at UK in May 2009, with a dissertation on the topic of mid-20th century American opera. In 2008, he was named Kentucky Arts Educator of the Year by the National Society of Arts and Letters. He is also a 1984 graduate of Asbury University, B.A. in Piano Performance, and a 1987 graduate of Regent University, M.A. in Communication.
