by Nitsuh AbebeThe Stairs are a hard band to figure out -- while one would hope that their shameless imitations of British Invasion and '60s pop were entirely tongue-in-cheek, the liner to Mexican R&B claims (with apparent seriousness) that this is actually the sound of the present. Either way, the band doesn't fare well: if they really are kidding, their mono recreations of times past are too accurate to carry any humor -- and if they're simply holding onto a worthwhile sound whose time has passed, their blatant theft of entire riffs from the Who and the Byrds keeps them from achieving anything remotely valuable.
