When author Elizabeth Earley was ten years old, her older sister sustained traumatic brain and bodily injuries from a car wreck. That event, many years later, is what inspired Earley to write her novel, A Map of Everything. And her novel inspired the musicians and poets on this album to respond to the tragedy, the addictions, the love and the redemption within the story. Says Earley: "My sister's tragedy, and our family's long struggle after it, made me realize what fragile creatures we are — physically and metaphysically. But we heal. Healing is a process that occurs unwilled. If you break an arm, you don’t have to think about how to make it heal. The bone grows back together. Life is a regenerative enterprise at every level. Life is also — from its smallest, basest, microscopic level to its largest, lumbering form — interconnected."
