简介
Peggy's own words: I am very proud to present this body of work, as a seminal offering of my music through the years. This is a collection of some of the most personal of my compositions. The project began with the tune "Phille", which I composed after my mother's death. The chordal structure made me want to assign an instrument to each of the voices in each chord, so that they could 'live and breathe'. I think chorally, so that is what I have created here. Of course I recognize that it is very difficult to categorize this music, as it does not fit the traditional jazz scope, even though it includes improvisation. Neither is it classical music. So it must be a genre all its own, and that is fine with me. There is a story to most of the tunes: "Caterina/ Isabela" was written for a member of my jazz choir in upstate New York, who was tragically killed in an auto accident, 9 months pregnant. Her name was Catherine. The baby, Isabela, survived. It also happens to be the names of a dear Italian colleague of mine' s daughters, and the lyrics are in Italian -- loosely meaning, when children go to play, bells ring, and you can hear the distant stars illuminating us here on Earth. "New Year's" was written in response to the doomsayers, who are wrong every year, because new years, thankfully, just keep coming! The one solo piano piece on the CD was free play on my reharmonization of the standard Time After Time, and it takes one on a journey from frenetic to a very consonant, peaceful, hymn-like conclusion. "Red Bug Slough" was written for an alligator-infused pond I witnessed in Florida. "Jury Duty" was written during - wait for it - jury duty, in New York City. "Zinfandel" is dedicated to my wonderful dog, Zinny.
