La Pila del Pato is the first discographic project by Chemón Cortés. All of the tracks are original compositions that bridge the seemingly insurmountable gap between Jazz and traditional Middle Eastern music, two musical styles that have more in common than one would think at first. The rhythmic base follows traditional Arabic patterns, some quite complex for most western listeners, and some melodies are also built upon oriental (maqam) modes. From this starting point, the artist goes beyond mere derivation and imposes his own musical character upon the compositions, providing them also with a thematic structure taken from jazz in which improvisation (taqsims) takes the central stage.
