Estilito “EJ” Diaz is an upcoming singer, songwriter, and producer who cannot be filtered into one genre or another. Born into the eclectic musical household of a Venezuelan, salsa-singing, Barbra Streisand loving father and a conservative Christian mother, Estilito was exposed to every style of music from a young age, including the harmony-driven chart toppers from Boyz II Men, the industry-changing Motown sound, the never-fading brilliance of the Earth Wind and Fire classics, or Gloria Estefan’s “Mi Tierra” album, which he claims is the most perfectly constructed album he’s ever heard, nothing was safe from the developing “jukebox” in his mind. As he began to understand the lyrics of songwriters like Prince, Bryan Adams, Jewel, and Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds among many others, he found himself drawn to the art of their poetry. Their word choices and paintings of emotional circumstances and situations created a canvas for him to begin the outlines of what would eventually become his own unique style. Drawing from the influential old school and modern day cool cat styles of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Sam Cooke, to Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake, and mixing in the emotional vulnerability and vibrant cultural presence of the likes of Gloria Estefan and Marc Anthony, Estilito Diaz has found his own style and identity through music. Whether a conversationally-suave latin/neo-soul groove, or a soul-bearing heartfelt emotional ballad, the lyrics never seem to overreach to explain what the voice so clearly defines. His melodies are nonchalantly playful with the pocket, showing glimpses of a funk jazz influence, and while his cultural roots are strong, he shies away from placing himself, or any song for that matter, into a specific genre. “Every song is a story…a moment…an experience.
