The dozen original songs on this impressive 3rd album by Sam Rogers (a.k.a. The One Mouth Band) are not what you would expect from an a cappella singer/beatboxer. It's true that the songs & sounds are from his clever mind & mouth, but here it it is his heart that shines through. Proving himself a skilled songwriter, he pushes at the edges of love with the surprisingly accessible songs of "Could Love". With the booty-shaking opener "From the Inside Out" and pure pop of "So Simple, So Beautiful" that follows he explores the solid & tender soul underneath the superficiality of attraction. In "Just Us Two" he speaks to the issues of a couple breaking up over having children as if it were in a rock opera. "Carried Away" eerily conveys of the moment of realization that one is getting lost in a relationship, while "So Very Pleasurable" seductively sings of being blissfully lost in intimacy. The doo-wop of "Kiss That Didn't Happen" tells of two long-time friends, still waiting for the right moment to come together as lovers. The slow funk of "Rajani" is modern flirtation at its best, while the even funkier "Straight Man" playfully pokes at those who resist marriage-equality rights by using their own arguments against them. The title track "Could Love" is a polyrhythmic jazz call-to-arms for every heart that has ever played it safe. Written the day that he left a decade-long relationship, "My Way Away" is a stunningly raw glimpse into that decision. The Brazilian-flavored country tune "Much Better" and gentle reggae soul of "All Ways" provide a happy ending to the album with tales of just how worth it the quest for self and the search for love can be. About the artist: Sam Rogers is an award-winning solo vocal performer. He is called "The One Mouth Band" for good reason: he makes all the sounds of a band using only his mouth -- bass, guitar, synthesizers, horns, mouth-defying drums/percussion, and more -- with the precision of a seasoned musician. He is the first solo act to compete (and win!) in an a cappella group competition, a finalist in the 1st US Beatbox Championships, and happily astounds audiences from San Francisco to Sydney to Sao Paulo to Salzburg to Singapore. Sam grew up in a musical family, spending half his time backstage in smokey blues clubs and outdoor festivals or recordings studios where his father, Roy Rogers (the slide guitar player, not the cowboy), played the blues with John Lee Hooker and produced Grammy-winning albums like "The Healer." The rest of the time his mother, herself a folk singer, exposed him to folk, world, new age, and experimental music through her music/gift shop where Sam often "worked" as a child. All the while he eagerly devoured every scratchy old rock 'n roll and doo-wop record he could get his hands on, and built puppets and toy characters with hopes of one day working on The Muppets. Upon learning of Jim Henson's untimely death and hearing Bobby McFerrin for the first time, the voice characters morphed into voice instruments and a love for a cappella singing. Sam went on to found the successful teen a cappella group 'Til Dawn, study vocal jazz under legendary arranger Phil Mattson, tour the US & Canada as the vocal percussionist for collegiate a cappella group Audio Radiance, help found both The Vowel Movement Beatbox Salon and the improv theater/a cappella group Improvox, pioneer the use of live looping technology in a cappella settings, and perform with dozens a cappella groups, improv troupes, and bands.
