About Memory, Todd Kessler’s new album out this Fall, is a look back both personally and musically. With a timeless sound and universal stories, Kessler seeks to make sense of the past as a means of looking to the future. Musically this record is a reset button to his Singer/Songwriter and Americana/Folk roots after a series of releases with his Indie/Alt/Folk project Todd Kessler and The New Folk. Todd Kessler came on the scene in 2005 quickly establishing a name for himself in the live music community of Chicago and beyond. By 2009 he was headlining famed Chicago venues Lincoln Hall, Schubas, Double Door and Uncommon Ground in addition to independently releasing a full length album, two EP’s and a single. It was around this time that Todd Kessler and The New Folk began playing together greatly expanding on Kessler’s previous acoustic-based sound to include a horn section, string section and a second vocalist, giving his songs a more Orchestral-Folk-Pop quality. During the recording of their 2012 debut album Sea Fever Kessler got the call that he had made it to the final auditions of NBC’s The Voice, eventually securing a spot on the show as part of “Team Ceelo”. Though he didn’t win the show, Kessler’s exposure to such a large audience eventually led him to gigs opening for Pat Benatar, 10,000 Maniacs, and Nicholas David, including notable festival slots at Milwaukee’s Summerfest, Taste of Chicago, Mile of Music, Taste of Madison, and Red Gorilla Festival in Austin, Texas. After the 2012 release of Sea Fever The New Folk toured regularly throughout the Midwest and released 2 more singles, Exactly Where I Should Be and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. The genesis of About Memory came about in early 2015 after work on a new album with The New Folk stalled in the studio, leading Todd to seek a change of scenery and a more relaxed sound . After the birth of his second son in 2015, Kessler’s songs took on a more nostalgic tone, confronting the range of emotions that come with fatherhood. Like watching old home movies, these songs play like the soundtrack to memories universal to the human condition. Recorded in Los Angeles with a new group of musicians and a new production team, About Memory is a reboot, a new beginning for Todd Kessler, a return to his Singer/Songwriter roots, a way to move forward by looking back.
