“On Sundays we’d go out to Grandpa’s house for dinner. After the meal which had been cooked on a woodstove and prepared with water from a hand pump at the sink, we’d all go into the parlor. A big old upright piano dominated the room. All the chairs faced it. Grandpa’s fiddle lay on top. Someone would sit down at the piano and start to play. Grandpa would pick up his fiddle. Feet tapping, hands clapping, we’d listen and sometimes dance to the tunes he played. He always played ‘Put Your Little Foot.’ I guess because we were kids and had little feet. There was no TV. Grandpa had only just got electricity.” Beverley Conrad and Greg Burgess keep this family tradition alive with fiddle and piano music in Tunes from the Family Parlor. This collection of family favorites from the northern Appalachian Mountains blends Beverley’s old time fiddle style with Greg’s blues and jazz roots on piano. The two have been married since 1980 and although both perform their preferred style of music separately, they come together in this album in what is an old tradition – family music. Beverley Conrad and Greg Burgess are seasoned performers of central Pennsylvania. For twenty plus years they have entertained patrons at the historic Penn’s Tavern in Fisher’s Ferry, PA and other local venues with a broad mix of music spanning four centuries, and a combined repertoire that includes music of the Colonial and Civil War periods, Celtic, old time, classic country, soft rock, early blues and jazz, classic country, pop, and ethnic classics. Performances are tailored for events and because the playing of one song often leads to the memory of another, requests are always welcome. A combination of piano, fiddle, banjo instrumentals and subtle tongue in cheek vocals create a unique style reminiscent of the old Vaudeville days. For forty years, pianist, singer, and songwriter Greg Burgess has performed many types of music: Chicago blues (most notably as a sideman for Rochester, New York, bluesman Joe Beard), the span of jazz with his trio, even Celtic music with his wife, Beverley. As a soloist, Burgess mostly strives to reach deep into the blues tradition to find something that sounds new because it has been, or is about to be, forgotten. Though this musician from rural central Pennsylvania possesses sophisticated skills and knowledge of contemporary trends, Burgess’s playing sounds something like the house he lives in looks: an old log farmhouse that shouldn’t yet be torn down. Beverley Conrad, also known as the Fiddlerwoman, performs regularly as a fiddler and storyteller throughout Pennsylvania. With musical roots that go far back in her family and a musical skill that goes back to her childhood, she is listed with the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts as a living traditional folk artist. Whether it is a wedding, a retirement party, a street fair, or strolling through a mall for a grand opening, with over 700 tunes at her fingertips the songs she plays, as well as the outfit she wears, are tailored for each event. They were both members of the Williamsport-based Impromptu Blues Band, a band that inspired the formation of the Billtown Blues Association and one of the headliners of the first blues festival produced by the Association. Conrad and Burgess have showcased in Nashville, performed in Memphis at the Orpheum Theater and in New Orleans and have roots that go back to the smoky bars and lounges of Rochester, NY. Collectively and singularly Conrad and Burgess have released a dozen albums covering traditional as well as original tunes. Their recordings have been used in film, television, and educational productions. In 2013 they wrote and published The Headless Dog and Other Extraordinary Far-Fetched True Tales of Central Pennsylvania.
