简介
Volcano Trails is Wendell Ing's solo piano album. It traverses the landscapes of the Big Island, especially Volcano, home to ohi'a trees, gigantic hapu'u ferns, nene birds, apapane and Happy Face spiders. His style is improvisational and naturalistic. He counts classical music, especially Debussy, as a major influence in his jazz style. Currently he teaches music at Hilo High School, leads the Hilo High Ambassadors and plays gigs at his favorite tavern. He has been Musical Director for many shows for colleges and theater groups; and composed music for Discovery Channel and Honolulu Theatre For Youth. His songs have been recorded by Cecilio & Kapono, Diana Aki and the Brothers Cazimero. In the Seventies, his protest song "The Lake" with the group Illusion, was included on the first Habilitat "Homegrown" album. Prior to moving to the Big Island and making this recording, Ing played with groups Small Time Leroy in Brooklyn, and Cecilio & Kapono and Illusion in Honolulu. This recording was nominated for a Hawaii Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Best Instrumental Album in 1983. Subsequent to this recording, Ing released three more instrumental albums, Ohelo Berry Pie, Taking Off, And Light Years Away. All three were nominated for a Na Hoku Award for Best Instrumental Album.
