"Live at the Bunker" is the 5th album by the gifted New Zealand Singer/Songriter Wayne Gillespie in collaboration with long-time musical associate guitarist Nigel Gavin. New Zealand born Gillespie has been based in Sydney, Australia since 1988. Nigel Gavin originally from New York now resides in New Zealand. Since first meeting in New Zealand during the mid-eighties, Gillespie and Gavin have performed together regularly, in venues and festivals around Australia and New Zealand. Gillespie has previously released four studio albums and has shared the stage with artists such as Suzanne Vega, Neil Finn, Colin Hay, Chris Whitley and Dave Dobbyn. Gavin's playing also features on Gillespie's third album, Living in Exile. Gavin has also recorded with artists such as Robert Fripp, Gitbox Rebellion, Nairobi Trio and the Jews Brothers. This album is a recording of their 2003 show at the "The Bunker" - The historic command post on the top of Mt. Victoria, Devonport, New Zealand. The album features five new songs as well as live versions of nine previously recorded Gillespie originals. Acclaimed local singer Caitlin Smith and Narcs bass player Tony Waine also make guest appearances on several tracks. Auckland born Wayne Gillespie's first solo album, the acoustic 'Wayward Son' was released on his own label in 1984 and made the finals of the New Zealand Music awards in two categories: - Most Promising Vocalist & Folk Album of the Year. The song 'Away with You' off this album also won a special APRA award in the same year. This album also featured Harmonica player Brendan Power, Chanteuse Denny Stanway and Bob Shepheard on Bass. His second album 'New Locations' was released by CBS NZ/Aus in 1987 and was produced by ex Fairport Convention member Trevor Lucas. This album saw Wayne in the New Zealand charts and playing live in Australasia with artists such as Suzanne Vega, Dave Dobbyn, Redgum, and Shona Lang. Wayne relocated to Sydney in 1988. Wayne's third album 'Living in Exile' was released in 1993 (through Sony NZ & Festival Aust) and included Dave Dobbyn, Margaret Urlich, Mal Green, Amanda Brown, Peter Maloney & Nigel Gavin as guests. This album received much critical acclaim on both sides of the Tasman and saw Gillespie touring extensively in Australia and New Zealand both solo acoustic and in band mode. He has also made many Australian TV appearances in and performed on the final closing night of Ponsonby's legendary 'Gluepot' venue with Dave Dobbyn, Neil Finn, Shona Laing and the Brainchilds. During this time Wayne also completed a psychology degree at Macquarie university. His thesis 'The Personality of Rock Musicians' was published in the UK Journal of Music Psychology in October 2000. Gavin’s playing has embellished with many local bands such as the Jews Brothers, Nairobi Trio and the Blue Bottom Stompers as well as his work with Wayne Gillespie featuring in his New Locations Band (1986 –1988), on his “Living in Exile” album (1993) and “Live at the Bunker” album and tour in 2005.
