Soma is comprised of several artist/musicians from various bands and enterprises who periodically gather with a multitude of instruments and sonic ideas to create pure improvisation soundscapes. The idea of Soma is to take risks -- that may succeed or fail, depending on fate and the amount of spiritual cohesion among the musicians. Soma as a unit seeks to find that inexplicable, undefinable "zone" within which a certain meditative aural bliss may be reached. The first Soma session was held on New Year's Day of 1987. Sessions have taken place periodically and sporadically since then. A half dozen such sessions are known to have taken place. Soma sessions are conducted live with no rehearsal or forethought. Generally two microphones and a cassette deck are the equipment used to record these sessions. Sessions have been held in barns, churches, old rehearsal spaces and homes -- based on the musicians' collective inclinations. "Continuum" is a compilation consisting of various tracks from several of the first Soma sessions.
