by Charles SpanoThough Mice Parade began as a solo outlet for Adam Pierce, in March of 2001 Pierce formed a full band including Dylan Cristy of the Dylan Group, Doug Scharin of Him and Rex, the Tower Recordings' Marc Wolf, Doro Tachler of Schneck, and Rob King of Uncle Innocent. The group embarked on a tour of the United States, Europe, and Japan and in the process expanded the sound of Mice Parade. The playful and experimental All Roads Lead to Salzburg chronicles that evolution -- characterized by looser structures and more improvisation. The album takes electronica and ambient music to a new level with two drum kits (listen to the wildly rhythmic "Phasen Wise"), vibraphones, Chinese harp, guitar, and old synthesizers with a result that is somewhat akin to the kindergarten dreams of Iceland's Múm. All Roads Lead to Salzburg's highlights include tracks from the group's BBC sessions -- longer and reworked versions of the enchanting "Circle 1" and "Open Air Dance" from the Mokoondi album and the spacy and textured title track -- live tracks recorded in London and Tokyo, and airy improvisational pieces that were captured on mini-disc. Despite the variety of sources, the record is as consistent and challenging as a studio release. All Roads Lead to Salzburg is in no way a best-of; on the contrary it is a brilliant and flowing document of a project in flux.
