Maple Blues Award nominee and long-time Edmontonian Graham Guest is a young veteran of numerous music projects both local and international. A pianist, singer, songwriter, producer and radio host; he started out playing as a sideman with some of the top blues musicians in the world including the king of the blues saxophone Eddie Shaw. An eight year stint with Juno/Maple Blues Award winner Sue Foley is one of the numerous highlights of Graham’s sideman career and he is featured on Sue’s live DVD recorded for the long running German music program “Rockpalast” and well as three of her albums. In effect, Graham has also had a parallel career as a band leader, vocalist and recording artist in his own right. Of note are his collaborative projects with some of Canada’s top blues/roots musicians. “The Legendary Miles Johnson” project is a highly acclaimed original music project that Graham performs with Torontonian Raoul Bhaneja which blends blues and other roots music styles into a unique show without strict boundaries. A highlight was a ballet written to go with their music by the Edmonton School of Ballet. Also, Graham has toured across Canada and to Europe with his duo project with Canadian Harpdog Brown. Their recent album was well received and the duo appeared as guests on CBC radio’s “Saturday Night Blues” for a special in-studio performance. On his own, Graham recently released his long awaited first full length CD entitled “Relief”. Featuring a collection of his own songs, the Ian Martin produced recording features some of Edmonton’s best studio musicians. Having reached Number Five on the CKUA charts, the album is a hybrid of urban styles veering in and out of blues, but always rooted in the form. Whether on stage at Edmonton venues like Blues on Whyte, the Yardbird Suite or the Jubilee Auditorium, Graham has always loved bringing his all to the table. Sometimes throwing down boogie-woogie piano is the feeling for the day, and sometimes making a very personal connection with the audience by singing one of his own songs is the way to go; but the bottom line has always been, and continues to be, trying to find the music in the moment.
