Brent Jarvis is a Canadian jazz pianist and producer living in Victoria BC. Educated in Music at the University of Toronto; Brent has released five albums; the most recent being "The Medium" made up of equal parts be-bop, european classical music, and cuban rhythm. Drawing on the standard jazz repertoire and new compositions "The Medium" features the trumpet and conga playing of Latin Grammy award winning Miguelito Valdes , the bass playing of Steve MacDonald, and the timbale and cajon playing of Jose Sanchez. Loosely based on the Marshall McLuhan book "The Medium is The Message" this latest album more thoroughly explores the recorded medium. Previous recordings have included Brent's debut "Sequences". Originally released on Roadhouse records "Sequences" was named best jazz album of 2005 by CJAM FM in Windsor / Detroit and featured the outstanding guitar playing of Pat Coleman, the multiple Juno Award winning bass playing of Ken Lister and sensitive drummer and Juno Award winner Buff Allen. "Sequences" was followed up by "Solo Piano" also on roadhouse. Two independent releases have followed. "Daedalus - Poetry by Dorothy Livesay" featuring entirely original music and creating a new variety of standard song with words by the late Canadian poet Dorothy Livesay. "This One" released in 2012 combines fresh approaches to modern jazz music, is made up of primarily original material, and makes use of the modern potential of the recorded medium. Brent is also active as a teacher, producer and recording engineer. Brent has taught piano, musicianship, ensemble, as well as conducted master classes at The Victoria Conservatory of Music, Vancouver Island University, and at his private teaching studio in Victoria. Brent's credits as an engineer and producer include some of Canada's premier jazz musicians.
