简介

Mestre Barrão was born in Recife, a city renowned for its Brazilian music, dance and its long tradition of Capoeira. In 1974, Marcos began studying at an early age under Mestre Pirajá. While learning the foundations of the art, he showed an affinity for the drums and other instruments and he began to show an affinity for the skills that he would later become famous for. After three years of training with Mestre Pirajá, who stopped teaching for a time, Marcos went on to continue his training with Mestre Teté. Mestre Teté shared with him the ways of the Street Capoeirista, where he learned about the unpredictable situations of the street: how to be shrewd and clever while playing, how to read his opponents, and how to manage difficult situations that one invariably finds oneself in both in and out of the Roda. In 1979, he began to enter Capoeira competitions throughout North East Brazil and in 1980, Marcos began to teach. In 1982, a young Marcos was determined to test his skills against the best opponents he could find and entered the prestigious National Championship in Rio de Janeiro. Such was his skill and fortune that he returned home as Brazilian Champion. Upon his return, many opportunities opened up to teach in schools, community centres, and universities and eventually he formed the group Axé Capoeira. Read More... In 1987, he was graduated to First Degree Master by his Mestre Pirajá and has since received his Second Degree Master as well. In 1990, Mestre Barrão was invited to perform at the International Children’s Festivals throughout North America and eventually found himself in Vancouver BC Canada. After a short stint teaching in Italy, Mestre Barrão decided to immigrate to Canada in 1992 and began to teach there at various locations. In 1996, he opened Canada’s first Capoeira Academy, and today travels around the world to teach Capoeira. The mestres who assembled at the Melhores Do Seculo event in Curitiba Parana in 2000, recognized Mestre Barrão early on as one of the great capoeiristas of the century, due to his skill and contribution to Capoeira. Mestre Barrão has recorded nine CDs with Axe Capoeira along with distinguished guests Mestre Burguês, Mestre Acordeon, Mestre Duwalle and Mestre Tonho Materia to name a few. They have also released Axé Capoeira 2000, a video of the 2000 International Encounter as well as Axé Capoeira Performance Videos – Brazil 2001, Brazil 2003, & Brazil 2005. Mestre Barrão currently has schools in Canada, Brazil, United States, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Serbia, Azerbaijan, France, UK, Czech Republic, Angola, Turkey, Japan, Belarus, Poland and Sweden.
