Sometimes the best discoveries happen by mistake. Such was the case with indie-pop duo, The Kat & Josh. Brought together by a misunderstanding, singer/songwriter, Kat Quinn, and songwriter/producer, Josh Ricchio, found themselves in a bicoastal co-write, and quickly realized they had stumbled upon something great. Kat, known for her “perceptive pen” (PopMatters), was fresh off her critically-acclaimed EP, Rust to Gold, and was in search of New York City collaborations for her next project. She came across Josh’s band, Freak Owls, and was immediately entranced by his signature lush arrangements and “unrivaled ear for melody” (Critical Masses). Under the false impression that he lived in Brooklyn, Kat sent Josh a cold email, asking if he wanted to write a song together. He agreed and they began emailing takes of their first song, “Perfect Fit,” back and forth. It wasn’t until the track was nearly done, and Kat offered to stop by his studio to sing final vocals, that Josh told her that might be difficult… because he lives in LA. It was a happy accident that Kat hadn’t known he was on the opposite coast, or she would never have sent the email that led to The Kat & Josh. After penning the infectious single, “Perfect Fit,” the duo was inspired by its dance party rhythm and empowering message, and decided to make a three-song EP and see where it led. Each song evolved into the next, as the duo flew past their three song goal. The first time they had a spoken conversation was the day they met to take the band photo at the top of this page. The EP was already done. Separately, Kat and Josh have had their music featured in film, television, and commercials, and have earned the praise of industry tastemakers including Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, American Songwriter, and HelloGiggles. There is no telling what they can do together.
