How can we best describe the experience of a Wingnuts CD? Is it rock, country, country rock, pop, white R&B, folk rock? Yes! Wingnut music is an “eclectic” mix of well crafted tunes that blend contemporary lyrics with musical influences from the sixties to the present. Doug Leess and Ron Brault have been the artistic core of the Wingnuts since 1991, and continue to explore both new and familiar territory with this latest collection, What A Heart Knows . From the Chicago influenced opening track,“So Lonely”, to the simple, yet haunting “What A Heart Knows”, Ron and Doug are never content to just pick a lane, a destination, and a radio station without eventually changing the dial or setting a new course. This time around, they’ve got some able friends who aren't just along for the ride. Drummer Pete Generous teams with Doug to create a solid rhythm backbone; Eric Bolvin provides the perfect horns for “So Lonely”; Bob Leinbach smokes up his B-3 on a number of tracks; Ian Cameron sweetens “Jeanette” with his soulful string playing; Robby Springfield countrifies a beautiful performance with his pedal steel on “What A Heart Knows”; Bob Nunno’s raucous tenor sax playing hearkens back to the mid 70’s (when the song was first recorded by Doug) on “Yearnin’ Churnin’”. It all adds up to one of the keys to any great sound: the collaboration of some great players and material. But what ultimately ties this collection together are Ron and Doug, their songs, performances, production and their infinite enthusiasm for pop music.
