Chronic Future专辑介绍:by Vincent JeffriesThere are two ways to consider this self-titled debut from Arizona's Chronic Future. First, as an independent release by four determined and talented musicians in their early teenage years, it is a major accomplishment. The group's rap-rock style was burgeoning within the alternative music charts, and these Phoenix area youngsters proved on Chronic Future that they could soon take their place among the genre's elite. Capable performances and decent material mark this disc as a signal of massive potential and smart songwriting instincts. When considered as a single work of popcraft, however, this 1996 release falls short. The heavy-handed leftist line towing and generally flaccid lyrics may bother some listeners (unwilling to heavily condition their assessment of the disc in consideration of the group's age), just as the nondescript riffing and arrangements fall short of even the most generous of modern rock standards. These criticisms are generally supported by the band in interviews conducted years after Chronic Future was released, yet it is awkward finding fault with the work of...well...children. So, sticking to the bright side, Chronic Future's debut is ultimately to be commended for its cohesiveness and vision. Standout track "Scottsdale" -- with its pop giddiness and jokesterism working perfectly -- not so surprisingly ended up being Chronic Future's biggest hit, getting huge rotation on the group's home turf. Chronic Future is a more than impressive effort when all things are considered, but the record can only be recommended to hardcore fans of the group or the rap-rock genre.
