In 1980 my life took a drastic turn. At the time, I was living in California looking for a way into the music industry. I won a songwriter’s showcase performance, auditioned for a few bands, produced some demos for other artists, and co-wrote some tunes that never got placed with any publishers. At the same time, I continued writing what I hoped would be hit songs for somebody to record. Then one day I got a call from Otho, Iowa. In that call I discovered that my friends Frank Wiewel and Kirk Kaufman had hit the jackpot. Two major record labels had heard their demo tapes and wanted to see the band - but there was no band in reality - just recordings. Frank asked me if I wanted to come back to Iowa to put together a band to showcase for the labels. In short, that’s how I became a member of HAWKS, which signed with Columbia Records and had a couple of songs reach the middle of the Billboard charts, In all, I wrote seven songs that ended up on the two albums we made as a band. We were inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Music Hall of Fame in 2007. That was then. Now, thirty-five years later, I’m a solo artist with eight albums under my belt, including this one, for which I decided to record five of the songs I wrote for the HAWKS and pair them with seven new songs I had already recorded for a new album. Thus was born the CD you have in your hands - Now & Again. As fate would have it, the HAWKS (as I write this in February, 2017) are preparing to reunite for a very cool gig and we will be playing some of these songs I wrote so long ago. Now, for the first time, you can hear how they were originally conceived. I had a great time re-recording the old songs, and I think you’ll like the new ones just as well. Enjoy! -Dave
