Sherrill Nielsen was a renowned 50 year veteran in the world of Southern Gospel Music. He once wrote: “I first organized the group in the 1970's. Elvis gave us the name VOICE from a Christian periodical he had read. For several years we opened all of Elvis’ concerts. Elvis may have left the building, but his VOICE is still here.” Summarizing their talent and commitment to excellence; love and appreciation for an audience is an analogy for “The Impossible Dream,” and must be experienced to be understood. Ray Walker of the legendary Jordanaires wrote: “Sherrill Nielsen has made his mark on the Gospel Field and on the Commercial Field, as well. Sherrill's heart goes into everything he does. His association with Elvis was a highlight in both their lives. Elvis enjoyed and respected Sherrill's heart, artistry and his willingness to share with him and others. Sherrill’s music will be with us for generations. He was one of the Good Guys.” On the back of Sherrill's first paycheck Elvis wrote, "God loves you, but He loves you best when you sing." Sherrill last professional effort which thrilled and excited him was putting together this new premier gospel group he named, SHERRILL NIELSEN AND VOICE. An outstanding Southern Gospel Quartet consisting of Mike Martin, Nick Fike, Sean McCaw and Sherrill, they were always dedicated to the golden sounds of what Southern Gospel Music. And such is still true because the group continues to perform in memory of Sherrill. New groups are constantly coming on the scene, but Sherrill’s VOICE will always be known and remembered for providing the old Southern Gospel music; its harmony, message and sound – the timeless classics. Like Elvis, Sherrill “has left the building” but his music lives on. In March of 2010, The Southern Gospel News reported “Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame recipient, Sherrill Nielsen, has been diagnosed with lung cancer. Sherrill and Brenda were performing in Europe when they found a blood clot in his leg. They flew home to Alabama, where he developed pneumonia.” Sherrill passed away in Cullman, AL, at 11:06 am, December 10, 2010. He was the original tenor with the Imperials and his tenure in Southern Gospel Music includes groups such as Masters V, Hovie Lister & the Statesmen, Speer Family, Songfellows and the Plainsmen. Sherrill was in several Hall of Fames and was a Living Legend Award recipient. Felton Jarvis wrote that Sherrill was Elvis’ favorite singer. His association with Elvis was legendary. Co-producer Harrison Tyner wrote: “Sherrill was always a pure joy to work with – a true professional; a legendary singer and performer. But, after all the years and the roads we walked together; all the ups and downs we shared, that which I cherish most is the memory of his unwavering loyalty and friendship. I can say with certainty that he was always dedicated to and supportive of his loved ones and friends, of which I am proud to say I was one.” 8-time Grammy winner and co-producer Tom Pick wrote: “With the passing of Sherrill, Brenda now needs our dedication and support as she struggles with losing the love of her life – a formidable struggle to say the least.
