简介
This is a recording of duets--songs and tunes we've loved for years, newly found gems dug up from our mountains of old records, books, and recordings, and a few of Carl's originals. Most were recorded at home in North Carolina, in Dittyville, Carl's old farmhouse. Surrounded by mattresses, cushions and quilts, aided by pots of tea and armfuls of firewood, we recorded ourselves in mid-winter, between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. when the birds and roads were quiet and the rest of the world was sleeping. We both have gathered with the old time music community for many years to share tunes and songs and revelry. In this recording we set out on our journey not knowing exactly where we were heading. Sometimes that's the best way to go. We hope you enjoy traveling along with us. The first song, KITTY WALTZ, is an old favorite and the first thing we ever sang together. It, COAL MINER'S, and CARTER'S BLUES come from the recordings of the Carter Family done between 1929 and 1938. I'M GOING TO THE WEST, BLUE-EYED BOY, LONESOME DOVE, and MOLLY DARLING are from Byron Arnold's fine 1950 collection of FOLK SONGS FROM ALABAMA. The singers were Janie Barnard Couch, Lena Hill, and Myrtle Love Hester. MISSISSIPPI MOON ( Rodgers/ McWilliams) and PRAIRIE LULLABYE (Rodgers/Brown) come from the legendary Yodeling Brakeman, Jimmie Rodgers. they were originally recorded by him in 1932, months before his death from tuberculosis in May of 1933. Beverly found THE WIDOW'S LONE DAUGHTER among many Library of Congress recordings. From the singing of Charles Ingenthron, ASLF12, we sang our version late one night into a single mike. The Three fiddle tunes are all crooked A tunes from West Virgina, a state rich in that tradition. SHELVIN ROCK comes from Wilson Douglas; BIG HOEDOWN, from Edden Hammons; and YEW PINEY MOUNTAIN from French Carpenter. We were inspired to learn LONELY TOMBS after hearing Wade Mainer and the Sons of the Mountaineers rousing version from an early recording (who wouldn't be?) The four remaining songs were written by Carl. MOVING LIGHTLY THROUGH THIS WORLD is a goal worthy of being an everyday pursuit fo us all. THE LAST REAL KISS is about paying attention to things as they happen. Things coming to a close, but especially, as far as kisses go-- enjoying and appreciating every on of them! THE QUEEN OF THE NIGHT stems from (pun intended) a flower in Israel that only blooms in the darkest part of the night and how we all have the potential to follow that example. A.P. is a song highlighting A. P. Carter's traits mentioned in a 1941 Life magazine article, the Ballad of A.P. Carter. Beverly's lifelong love of the Carter family's music inspired me to want to pay tribute to their amazing musical legacy.
