简介
Led by drummer Matthew Jacobson, with Derek Whyte (bass) and Nick Roth (alto sax), and trombonist Colm O'Hara, ReDiviDeR has marked itself out as a compelling unit in recent years. With regular festival performances in Ireland and 12 Points backing, they’re also a key member of the Match & Fuse touring initiative. You’ve heard them before, if you caught BBC Jazz on 3’s broadcast of the Match & Fuse London festival in 2012. meets I Dig Monk, Tuned is all original compositions from Matthew Jacobson, mixing downtown grooves and catchy riffs, with plenty of space for all players to trip through textural passages, lush harmonies and striking melodies. Citing influences including Charles Mingus, Jim Black, Deerhoof and Tim Berne, Jacobson also goes tangential on an early inspiration, Thelonious Monk. Anagram lovers will see that I Dig Monk, Tuned - with a little shuffle - is United Kingdom. And this is where the album’s four special guests come in. Kit Downes on keys, Alex Roth on guitar, Alex Bonney on trumpet/electronics and Ben Davis on cello, each feature on one track, composed specifically for them. Between them, these four UK musicians possess two Mercury Award nominations, a Dankworth Prize for Jazz composition and a BBC Rising Star Award. Recorded in February 2013 in Bow Lane Studios, Dublin with Jimmy Eadie and mixed in Berlin with Zodiaque, the album also bears a family touch, with Matthew’s brother Daniel (aka ZoiD) adding some post-production processing of his own. This is ReDiviDeR’s second album for Diatribe, Ireland’s leading record label for new sounds, following their acclaimed debut Never odd or eveN (Diatribe 2011). www.matthewjacobsonmusic.com www.diatribe.ie "ReDiviDeR can hold their heads up with the most creative new jazz bands anywhere as there’s a thoughtfulness, swagger, and confidence about them that’s fresh and fulfilling and crucially they also really cut it live. A big leap forward." Stephen Graham, Marlbank. 20th Sep 2013 "This playful inquisitive spirit flows through the music in the 7 accomplished compositions on 'meets I Dig Monk, Tuned'... the result is an inspired endeavour... Like some fine Italian cooking, a few ingredients used the right way produces something unexpected, satisfying and hugely enjoyable." No More Workhorse. 26th Sep 2013 "This is a group that likes to explore the edges of music: a collage of loops, samples and old-fashioned noise blends with tightly written melodies for the horns, underpinned by Jacobson’s twisted grooves. Think Steve Coleman meets Deerhoof, in a darkened room." Cormac Larkin, The Irish Times. 11th October 2013 "...drummer/leader Matthew Jacobson (recently a Fulbright scholar of improvisation in New York), is a European jazz artist of growing charisma... [Tim] Berne and Jim Black fans, among others, will feel at home with this variously melodious and unswervingly exploratory music." John Fordham, The Guardian. 11th October 2013
