When I returned from my tour of duty in Iraq, I felt so dispirited that even songwriting, once my greatest joy, left me unfulfilled. Clouded by emptiness, I struggled for years to reclaim the person I had been. These songs are my journey through that darkness. These songs would never have been finished if Olivier Morel had not asked me in early 2009 to appear in his documentary film Welcome Home about returning veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He encouraged me to work on these songs that I'd begun when I returned from the war but had been unable to finish. I am very grateful to him because creating this album has brought great healing and redemption to me.
