I first became aware of JJ Cale when I was just starting to take an interest in the guitar at age 13. Eric Clapton’s cover of “Cocaine” was in everyone’s record collection and the chord progression was one of the first things I ever learned on the guitar. I remember vividly the satisfaction of learning that song and realizing that the guitar and I were going to have a lifelong relationship. Fast forward to 2010. I had spent the last bunch of years on the road with various bands and songwriters. I was “musically lost” and basically in a dark place. The one positive thing in my life was entering a new relationship with a wonderful person who, in a very subtle way, put me on the path that I’m on right now. We both discovered that we had a mutual love and respect for JJ Cale and in that first year we dove into JJ’s catalogue and spent countless nights listening to everything that we could find. It was also at this time that I realized with her help, I was ready to embark on a solo career. And JJ was the guy that gave me the confidence. One thing I regret was not seeing a JJ show before he passed. He was and is my biggest musical influence. Without him, I would not be doing what I do today. For the past few years I’ve wanted to record a tribute to him, and the planets finally lined up this year. This collection of songs was recorded “live off the floor” directly to 2” tape. 4 people playing music together in a beautiful room. No headphones. The only overdubs are the shakers and tambourines and a few sparse rhythm guitar parts. I hope you enjoy our versions of these songs. This record was a lot of fun to make. And thank you JJ.
