There is no doubt that Norman van Geerke is one of Suriname’s most talented composers and singers. For many years he has chosen to work behind the scenes and has collaborated with a variety of well-known Surinam artists including Jörgen Raymann. In 2008, Norman was assigned as musical director with the internationally famed Metropole Orchestra for the IKO Crossover concert in Amsterdam, a tribute to legendary Surinam singer Hugo Uiterloo. The concert featured various popular Dutch and Surinam performers including Oscar Harris, Replay, Boris and Angela Groothuizen. Norman has chosen 2011 as the year for the release of his long overdue debut-album titled Eygi Sani. The songs that will be placed on this album are an expression of Norman’s desire to present a variety of Surinamese music styles and he has purposely chosen for all the lyrics to be written in the Sranang Tongo language. The songs on the album are a variety of traditional Surinamese rhythms such as kaseko and badji, blended with modern melodies in which Norman can truly express his vocal strength. Each of the songs on the album is a powerful display of Norman’s creativity as a composer and moods on the songs range from sheer joy to bitter sadness. Different lyricsists including Guus Pengel (writer for Jörgen Raymann, Steve Mariat and Al Goodah), Vincent Soekra and Andy van Geerke have contributed to the lyrics on the tracks. Robin van Geerke has taken on the task of arranging the music for Eygi Sani and has compiled an impressive collection of top musicians to participate in the album including Guno Kramer and Eddy Veldman on drums, Eric Calmes on bass while Robin himself plays the piano and keyboard. Eygi Sani is a complete “in-house” production of Van Geerke Music, the media production company formed around Robin, Norman and Andy van Geerke. Recent productions of Van Geerke Music include the latest album of singer Monique Mijnals and the soon to be released single Divine, performed by Asaada featuring Surinamese rap artist Ori.
