The Cello Enters the World of Rock Music Bass Guitarist Philip Bynoe Uses Meisel Cello On His Latest Recording SPRINGFIELD, NJ – The cello isn’t an instrument normally associated with rock music – but bass guitarist Philip Bynoe is no ordinary rock musician. On his latest recording, “A Member of the Population,” Bynoe uses a Meisel cello to create a totally unique sound. Bynoe’s cello playing complements the rock soundtrack perfectly. The driving bass guitar beat and the smooth, melodious tones of the cello create an astonishing and unexpected synergy. The news of Bynoe’s innovative use of the Meisel cello delighted the instrument’s manufacturers. “We’re extremely proud to have such a distinguished musician as Philip Bynoe performing on one of our cellos,” said Neil Lilien, president of Meisel Music. “The unique sound he creates with his instrument is truly amazing. We wish him every success in bringing the beautiful sound of the cello to a whole new audience.” Bynoe’s use of a cello on “A Member of the Population” should come as no surprise to those who are familiar with the L.A.-based Berklee graduate. The son of an upright bass player and a classical cellist, Bynoe began playing the cello at the age of seven. Though his musical success came as a bass guitarist backing such artists as Slash, Steve Vai and Kevin Eubanks, the cello always remained his first love. In constant demand as a bass guitarist both live and in the recording studio, Bynoe enjoys performing on his cello whenever his busy schedule allows, and has made several recordings as a cellist. “The fact that a lifelong, accomplished cello player like Philip Bynoe would choose a Meisel instrument says a lot about the quality of our cello,” noted Lilien.
