Marty Anderson and Chuck Peden are recognizing 30 years of harmony and harmonies with the release of their first CD, “Farther Down the Road”. Music is what brought them together while both were undergraduate students in Chico, California, and it has been a constant in their married life ever since. In fact, all of their children (Sean - bass; Brandon - drums; Amanda - background vocals; Pat - CD artwork; and Dylan - drums and background vocals) participated in the making of the CD. The new recording also features performances from Chuck’s collaborators in the Badger Mountain Dry Band (http://www.theentertainernewspaper.com/music/bmdb/bmdb.php), a progressive bluegrass band in south eastern Washington State where Marty and Chuck now live. BMDB regulars John April (guitar and mandolin), Kurt Gustafson (bass), Jim Honeyman (mandolin) and Joe Smart (guitar, fiddle and mandolin) all participated with Joe, the 2005 Winfield flat-picking guitar champion, specially featured on all but one of the songs. Other musical contributions were provided by southeast Washington musicians Michelle Cameron (from Humphrey, Hartman and Cameron), Ben Leggett, guitar ‘wunderkind’ Gregg Belisle-Chi, Tim Sedgewick (former BMDB bassist), and local jazz favorites Debi and Frank Eng. A good friend of Chuck’s San Francisco area band (The Woods), Tim Sheehan, also provided beautiful finger picking guitar work on the song “The Crossing” via remote, ‘electronic’ collaboration. “Farther Down the Road” consists primarily of Chuck’s songs as a writer and co-writer, with styles that range from folk (“The Crossing”) to light jazz (“We’re Home”) to folk-rock (“Balancing Act”). Many of the songs were specifically written as duets with Marty and Chuck sharing the lead vocals – but always there are the harmonies, with their vocal blend containing that natural feel that comes from 30 years of singing together. After many local club gigs in Chico in the late 1970’s with initial collaborator, Ron DeJesus, they moved south to Santa Barbara and continued as a duo during Chuck’s graduate student days at UCSB. Among many performances in the Southern California area, they developed and honed their special blend and shared lead vocals with a weekly gig at Peabody’s Bar and Grill in Montecito. It was there that that they also initially began producing recordings for family and friends with projects that included a live set from the Peabody’s performances, and a hip collection of songs (“Circle”) that has been enjoyed by their many nieces and nephews, children of friends, and their own kids. After taking a break during their 9 years in New Mexico when the kids were young, Marty and Chuck resumed performing after moving to Washington in the early 1990’s. Since then, they have been featured at Seattle’s annual Memorial Day weekend Folklife Festival, and the Yakima and Tumbleweed Folklife festivals, in addition to numerous local club gigs. It was also here that Chuck joined the Badger Mountain Dry Band with this new musical direction adding to the ‘palette’ of Marty and Chuck’s original songs.
