In creating 'Verse', Callen Clarke produced a good deal more music than could be contained on a single CD. In the end, choices had to be made, and even then, 'Verse' clocked in at 72 minutes with 17 tracks. Now, for the first time, you can hear the 'Verse' that wasn't 'Verse', music made on the way to discovering Verse Music. This album includes 'Great Spirit' (Gen: 4:26) which was intended to be track 2 on 'Verse', and was cut at the last minute, and 'Travels' an early musical depiction of Jesus' ministry, later replaced by the 'Verse' tracks 'Meshikha' and 'Come and See.' Verse Outtakes is only available for digital download. Notes for specific Tracks: N E S H E R : This was Callen Clarke's very first foray into Digital Recording, before he had begun to study the Oud. The Rock and Techno elements are evident in this piece. You can also hear a very simple Oud part and some live Rebaba playing, and Qanun samples, added towards the end of production as knowledge of actual Middle Eastern Music began to impact the compositional approach. G R E A T S P I R I T : This track, incorporating layered samples of an ocarina and primarily sequence-driven was included in the original Verse track listing right up to the last minute, and had to be cut from Verse for reasons of space. It is intended to evoke the worship of the Spirit among pre-civilization peoples. N I G H T S O N G : An unedited improvisation on the Oud, recorded circa 2002. This will be reworked for an upcoming release. 9 / 8 I D E A : Playing with Qanun Samples and Percussion Loops after a first foray into the study of Middle Eastern Music at the Arabic Music Retreat (2001) The final drum loop is a special Tunisian Iqa performed by Taoufiq Ben-Amor. F O R G O T T E N S O N G : This song was discovered among the unreleased Verse material. It had words once upon a time, but they have been lost. Y E S H A — Y A H U : The Hebrew form of the name 'Isaiah' and inspired by the revelations given to that prophet. T E N T A M M U Z : This is identical to the version found on Verse, but is included in order to showcase the extended next section: 'Flames of Yerushalayim' which was originally part of the same track and had to be cut for reasons of space. This coda to Ten Tammuz should come directly after it, without a pause. F L A M E S O F Y E R U S H A L A Y I M : 'Yerushalayim' is the Hebrew for 'Jerusalem.' U N N A M E D S O N G : A concerted effort to compose something thoroughly Middle Eastern in style. The main theme was later adapted for the intro of 'Kefa's Song' from Verse. M I D H B A R An evocation of Hebrew Prophecy and the Desert environment that gave birth to it. This material was reworked for the 3rd Movement of Callen Clarke's Spirit Symphony (2010) The Rebaba and flutes are performed by Callen Clarke. H U K H A I Meaning 'He lives' or 'he is alive' in Hebrew. For the programmatic content, please see the verse reference. This was an early attempt to convey the drama of the Resurrection and was later replaced by 'Kefa's Song.' T E F I L L A T O U D 'Tefillat' is Hebrew for 'prayer.' . . . F R O M A N U N U S E D R O O T Anyone who has studied Biblical Hebrew will be familiar with this phrase. This track was deliberately repetitive in an effort to explore trance and its relationship to worship. The drums are the Moroccan Bendir and the stringed instrument is an Armenian Tar. All instruments are performed by Callen Clarke. T R A V E L S This track was intended to depict the developing ministry of Yeshua (Jesus) in the Galil in the First Century. It was later replaced by 'Meshikha' and 'Come and See.'
