简介

Chris Bazile was born in 1953 in Pétionville, Haïti, and spent his school years there. He early on distinguished himself as a singer in the choir that regularly performed at Église St Pièrre. At this time, Chris became friends with many of the musicians of the era, in particular Les Freres Dejean and Isnard Douby. Other influences from that time include jazz singers such as Nat Cole, Johnny Hartman, and Tony Bennet, as well as popular Haïtian artists of the time, such as Tabou Combo, Roger Colas, Gerard Dupervil, and of course Guy Durosier. While his family was supportive of his appreciation of music and the arts in general--they were, after all, frequent visitors to the Dejean household--the typical admonitions against adopting music as a full-time profession applied. This was to change rather abruptly in 1973 when Chris visited his sister in Boston. Instead of going directly from the airport to her house, they went out to dinner at a night club where Volo Volo was performing that evening. Among other people at the club was one of Chris' former teachers from high school, who just happened to be playing drums in a newly-formed Afro-Combo de Boston. Chris was recruited on the spot, attended a rehearsal with them the next afternoon, and was immediately instated as the lead singer for Afro-Combo de Boston. Afro-Combo de Boston continued to grow both musically and in popularity, resulting in the release in 1976 of Stylistique, Page 1. Besides receiving critical acclaim in its day, this recording has never been "out of print", and has become arguably one of the best selling Haïtian recordings of all time. There was never to be a Page 2. By 1978, three of the members had relocated to other cities in pursuit of other opportunities. Chris and several other former members of Afro-Combo de Boston became successfully assimilated into Volo Volo. They continued to perform and release significant recordings well into the 1990s. By 1990, history was ready to repeat itself, and several of the members of Volo Volo, most notably Chris and Guy Gondre, had left Boston. As it happened, they ended up not far from each other in Florida, and so continued to remain in contact, leading to the formation of the band, Zig Zag. After numerous requests from his long time fans, Chris has, on several occasions since 2004, fronted "reunion tours" of Volo Volo that have been well received. This latest release reveals Chris looking to expand his repertoire beyond konpa, building on the influences of his youth as well as his experience.
