The vinyl-sampled beats were produced on an MPC 1000 and a MPC 5000 and over-layed with closet-recordings that sound crisp and warm, never betraying that they were captured in a stuffy apartment down by the Boise River. “I Never Went to Summer Camp” is an 8 track, 3 skit, and 1 outro journey, intended to be listened to from front to back. The album is ripe with nostalgia, ranging from the old-school boom-bap style beats, to Andy O.’s lyrical, introspective portraiture that centers on the woes of growing up in contrast to the playful demeanor conjurable in the “now”. The trip down the rabbit-hole begins with the playful exposition in the opening track “Summer Camp”, which denies the listener a hook and exemplifies Andy’s unconventional, wordy, and complex style, and advances to “Always Runnin’”, which explores the Millennial mindset of mistrust and the loss of childhood. From here the subject matter takes a more heartfelt turn with “Tiger Lily & Pete”, a tale of the conflict between love and the pursuit of money, and “10 3 14”, dedicated to Andy’s younger brother who grew up in the face of adversity without an older brother to stand up for him. The album ends with a sharp departure from the depths of the inner-psyche to “The Basement”, a jarring battle-style track to commemorate Andy’s multiple wins in Boise’s monthly underground freestyle battles. The singles “Summer Camp” and “Tiger Lily & Pete” have both received play on The Wreck and Bangers & Mashups on 89.9 KRBX Radio Boise, and a tour is planned for early 2016 throughout the Northwest.
