简介

Khamira's genre-bending sound is the result of open minded musicians combining to create a fusion of Welsh folk, Indian Classical, jazz and rock. Suhail Yusuf Khan's virtuosic Sarangi dovetails with Tomos Williams' trumpet (Pan O'wn y Gwanwyn and Hiraeth am Feirion), Vishal Nagar's tabla joins in a dynamic rhythmic dialogue with Mark O'Connor's drum kit (Y Gwydd), while Aditya Balani's soaring guitar solos are supported by Dave Jones' keyboard and Aidan Thorne's bass (Answers, Dance of Nothingness, both original compositions by Aditya). These songs are interspersed by the pure, authentic natural beauty of Suhail Yusuf Khan's vocals and Tomos Williams' trumpet on Ffarwel i Gymru/Morey Nain and the intense jugalbandi (duet) of sarangi and tabla, rooted firmly in Hindustani Classical music at the end of Basant. All four Welsh musicians are well known for their involvement in pioneering jazz/folk cross-over band Burum, (as well as many other projects [Aidan Thorne leads Duski and is a member of Slowly Rolling Camera. Dave Jones leads his own Quartet), and it was a Burum tour of India in 2014 that instigated the relationships and concept behind Khamira. The band presented a masterclass at the Berklee-affiliated Global Music Institute in New Delhi, which is Directed by Aditya Balani. Aditya then recommended Suhail for Khamira, who in turn recommended Vishal Nagar on tabla. All three Indian musicians are widely respected: Aditya Balani – a Berklee graduate – is an unique performer/composer/educator who straddles genres and styles. His solo EP 'Constants and variables' was chosen as one of the top 15 EPs by Rolling Stone India in 2015 Suhail Yusuf Khan, a virtuoso Sarangi player and vocalist (who might already be familiar to UK audiences through his involvement in the trio 'Yorkstone, Thorne, Khan' and numerous other cross-cultural projects) is considered one of the leading musicians of his generation in India, while Vishal Nagar, who is from New Delhi, but based out of San Francisco is in high demand in the Bay area and Internationally, playing in numerous Indian, world and jazz projects. With all the musicians bringing their skills and influences to bear on the band sound, Khamira's music is somewhere between the cinematic scope of the Pat Metheny Group and the grunge funk of Miles Davis' 70s band, inter-twinned with passages of melancholic Welsh folk music and Indian classical virtuosity. A mutual respect and shared vision of what is possible when cultures meet is at the heart of Khamira. The apparently disparate elements of Indian Classical and Welsh folk are joined together by the unifying aesthetic of jazz and improvisation which creates an unique, vivid and dynamic music. Khamira has been generously supported by the International branch of the Arts Council of Wales – Wales Arts International – who funded this recording at Red Kite Studio, Llanwrda, near Llandovery in rural mid-Wales during the summer of 2016.
