by Thom JurekHighly experimental French sounds emanating from homemade instruments and recording constructs create quite a varied listening experience even for seasoned avant-garde fans. With the exception of Frederic Le Junter playing an electric guitar, a melodica, and a bass, nothing here will seem familiar. The construction of new instruments by Pierre Berthet are designed to dislocate the center of the listening experience and play tricks on the ear, forcing the listener to search of the sonic center of his music. Variations on trumpets, drums, and such create an environment where rhythm and harmony may seem familiar, but certainly their context has been warped and rearranged by the tonal variations of their settings. Much of this sounds like the early D.A.F. records from the late '70s, but there is no doubt that it has its charm, and part of it lies in its ability to create these vast soundscapes using a fairly simple array of instruments, a wild imagination, and a few overdubbing tricks. The songs are not much on their own, but as links in a chain of expression and subversion of harmony, melody, and rhythmic stasis, they are nearly brilliant. Highly recommended.
