Mississippi‘s Daughter tells the story of my life and all the places, situations and circumstances I’ve traveled through. We all have a place where we begin our journey and for me Mississippi is where my roots happened to be planted. I named the album “Mississippi’s Daughter” because that is who and what I am. I am a product of my environment. I was raised by a single mother and her parents, so I sing like my grandfather; I’ve got faith like my grandmother and a story to tell just like my mother. There are so many people; teachers, church leaders, friends, cousins; school yard bullies ; old boyfriends…so many things in Mississippi that are responsible for shaping me into the woman I have become. This is my way of thanking everyone without excluding anyone. The songs paint a picture of me and display all of the ingredients that come together to make “The Gabbie Cake”. I'm a country girl traveling the world. I love to eat hot water cornbread and buttermilk while wearing slinky stilettos on my way to a late night jam session in a smoke filled jazz club in Southeast Asia. I’m just a girl from Greenville, Mississippi living her dream. ♥ Who are your musical influences? There are so many musicians/vocalists who have influenced me in one way or another over the years; it’s hard to only name a few. But I’ll try…I am a huge fan of Nina Simone. I adore the depth and textures of her voice and I love how honest she was in her lyrics. I admire and appreciate artist like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Nancy Wilson, B.B. King, Phoebe Snow, Roy Ayers, Cassandra Wilson, George Benson, Will Downing, Rachelle Ferrell, Maysa Leak, Lizz Wright, Casting Crowns, Fred Hammond, Lalah Hathaway, Ledisi and Chrisette Michelle. I love vocal acrobatics and technique; but I am a push over for tone. I’m also drawn to creative writing; I think that’s why I’m drawn to the artists I mentioned, they all have great voices with beautifully meaningful lyrics. Finish this statement, Music is... one of the most powerful means of expression known to man. It is the one thing no matter where you are in the world; what culture you’re from or what language you speak; music can be that one common denominator, it is the bridge that brings people together. Who will this album speak to: This album will speak to anyone who’s had to start from scratch; whether it’s baking a cake or building a house. I don’t want to show favoritism; I love them all. These songs are like my children, I love them differently but equally. My advice to listeners is to just buy them all...please don't separate my children! ♥
