Brad Russell is the Worship Pastor at First NLR in North Little Rock, Arkansas. His specialty is music for the church. That's the wellspring for this fun and lighthearted Christmas project. This is a soulful, piano-driven collection of songs rooted in gospel and blues. Some of Brad's influences are Ben Rector, Keith Green, Kirk Franklin, Billy Joel, Israel Houghton, Andrae Crouch, and Sting. As the name of the project implies, "Christmas" is a straight-forward but joyful interpretation of some of the most dearly loved Christmas songs of our time. Starting off strong with a gospel flare, "Deck the Halls" sets the tone of the project, letting the listener know this is not a sleepy, slow-paced project. "Go Tell It On The Mountain" continues the gospel feel and features some original writing, giving the song a fresh approach. A standout track is the obvious nod to Ben Rector in "Away In A Manger." This performance captures the singer-songwriter vibe and conveys a sincere gratitude for the work of grace in our lives. Providing balance to the uptempo arrangements are a couple of tasteful and interesting piano instrumentals on "Angels We Have Heard on High" and "Hark the Herald Angels Sing/O Come All Ye Faithful."
