Fragga Ranks burst onto the scene with tracks like “Hug Mi Up” for Robbie Shakespeare and Danny Browne’s Powermatic label during the early nineties. Right from the start, his big, expressive tone of voice singled him out as a contender and it’s a mystery why such early promise hasn’t reaped dividends until now. “Turn Me On” is a one-rhythm album of his own productions, led by the cajoling, yet commanding title track, voiced by Fragga himself. The beats are dancehall-friendly but just as likely to attract the attention of club DJs thanks to a bright, uncluttered mix and judicious use of strings FX. A sultry “Hot Gal” by Frankie Paul and the tortured “on My Mind” from Sizzla, on which he raps, as well as deejays, heads the celebrity input. The latter is one of Sizzla’s better recent efforts, and he sounds entirely at home as a rapper. Pecos, Sluggy, with the uncharacteristic “In Da Club” (a lively party tune), and Future Fambo, aka Future Troubles – heard here flashing nuff style on “Hot Wuk” – are the other well-known names gathered around Fragga’s mic, and none of them disappoint, especially the latter two. The other featured guests are newcomers, or at least they are to European and Jamaican ears. Rippa Jackson is a soulful vocalist with impressive range and technique, as heard on “Come On”, whilst Dazzlin and Quiet Storm are a deejay combination that generates a fair amount of excitement on “Romance Dem”. One of them favours Roundhead in fact, whilst Bajie Man is a mic specialist with a dirty sense of humour and plenty of skills. “What A Prekeh” indeed!
