Jim Connolly专辑介绍:by Eugene ChadbourneBassist Connolly was based in Santa Barbara when he assembled this medium sized ensemble whose sympathies lie somewhere between a jazz band and a chamber group. Just as Duke Ellington wrote extended works about the places he traveled, Connolly seems to have created a body of work focusing around Gove County and, as the title suggests, there is a sense of haunting loneliness, perhaps even ennui. Or this could be a false impression created by moments of sluggishness and lethargy in the performances. Perhaps a visit to Gove is necessary in order to determine this, but stand advised that other modes of transport are required other than hitching a ride with a traveling circus. On "Pinnocchio" a bass trio is featured and the leader's rich tone and relaxed phrasing is clearly evident. Such playing talent combined with the arranging talents necessary to whip together such a project involving written parts for strings and reeds show Connolly to be a double threat as a musician. All the members of the octet get some playing space as the arrangements leave space for improvisation. The strings are a nice touch but can seem to be the culprits sometimes when things start to bog down in Gove County.
