by William CooperLe Click is yet another of faceless European dance acts like Real McCoy and Livin' Joy that managed to cross over to Top 40 radio in the mid-'90s. While Le Click's music is nothing more than assembly-line dance-pop, it is very difficult to ignore the melody and energy of Tonight Is the Night. The music of Le Click certainly won't win awards or change the world, but it is excellent to dance to, and that's why it was made anyway. "Don't Go," "Call Me," and "Tonight Is the Night" became dancefloor staples in the mid-'90s; all three are included here. Surprisingly, the rest of the album is just as engaging, boasting the rhythmic house grooves, soaring female vocals (by Kayo), and throwaway lyrics of the three hits. "Tell Me That You Want Me" (with its Crystal Waters "Gypsy Woman"-style keyboard line) and "And We Fly" are guaranteed dancefloor fillers, and the rest of the album is beautifully consistent. Unlike other dance acts, Le Click doesn't resort to including a ballad or two on Tonight Is the Night to prove it has range. This album is dance music through and through. The only problem with acts like Le Click is the lack of a distinctive personality. Le Click sounds so much like other groups of its ilk, it's difficult to pinpoint what group does what song; the world of contemporary dance music is quite similar to the glory days of the Motown girl groups, when production and hit material was more important than the acts actually singing the songs. But dance music is supposed to move the feet and not the mind, in which case Le Click succeeds quite well, despite the relative anonymity of its members. Tonight Is the Night is frothy, disposable fun.
