Serene Rivers was born Barbara Sheri McCray in Cincinnati, Ohio USA. She went to Cincinnati School of Creative and Performing Arts and it's predecessor from K-6. She testing into Walnut Hills (a school for scholastically gifted children) and was pulled out of art school to focus on practical studies. Her parents felt that she had a better chance at succeeding if she applied herself to practical studies versus the arts. Most of her childhood was spent in some of the worst "hoods" in Cincinnati. As an African-American from an economically disadvantaged background growing up in a city where the Klu Klux Klan was still burning their cross downtown during the Winter Holidays the tragedies of racism and poverty were brought to her attention at an early age. During her teenage years she was a delinquent. She skipped school often and stole clothes because she was under the influence of a society that places way too much emphasis on material possessions. She was a product of a society with terribly misplaced values. She managed to graduate high school with a good enough GPA to get into her college of choice Howard University. Through connections that she made there and lots of self study she learned the true value of life. Despite the fact that she has been subjected to lots of racism during her life she believes that people of all colors are equally the children of The Most High. She loves all people and she believes that love for all humanity is the most valuable resource that we have. Her music reflects her love of humanity, her disgust with many of today's social structures and her urban up bringing. 50% of the proceeds from Serene Rivers album will be donated to Survival International which is an organization that works to protect the land and lifestyles of indigenous peoples all over the world. Enjoy and be blessed!
