Formed in late 2008 in Washington, DC, Möbius Strip is Andrew Etter (drums, voices), Mark Kennedy (strings, voices), and Pitt Stains (strings, voices). An indie rock band that can't quite shake off its punk and pop roots, Möbius Strip is one-third art enthusiast, two-thirds vegan, and one hundred percent computer geek. A Knee In The Back, recorded in December 2009 at Treehouse Studio, is the band's debut album. Devin Ocampo of Medications and Faraquet produced the recording, due out July 29, 2010, on Left Out Records. Previously, Möbius Strip contributed one track to a compilation celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Artomatic arts festival. Local blog DCist.com describes the band as "the love child of They Might Be Giants and Sleater-Kinney." Though colored with an element of early TMBG's stop/start energy, Möbius Strip's signature sound features a melodic bass lead with layered vocals and sudden changes in dynamic and intensity. The band's vocal delivery ranges from an honest, quavering croon to something that sounds like rocks in a cement mixer. A Knee In The Back's subject matter tends toward the political: songs about disenfranchisement, protest and the destruction of the natural world are peppered with tales of loss and a few quirky numbers. "My Museum" is a blistering track about breaking up, with a sing-songy lead guitar you'll be humming for days. "Pez Dispenser Head" is an anthrax-laden condemnation of mainstream politics, sealed in an infectious chorus and mailed to Capitol Hill. "Objects In Mirror May Be Closer Than They Appear" is the band's most dynamic song; opening with a stifled distress signal, the song erupts as metronomic percussion and muted chords give way to driving bass pulses, abrasive guitar riffs, and chaotic cymbal crashes. Möbius Strip performs regularly in Washington, DC, preferring benefits for local nonprofit organizations and events that promote the arts. Fans know to look out for flying shoes, footballs, and even band members when the Möbes take the stage in their monochromatic uniforms. Möbius Strip plans regional touring upon the release of A Knee In The Back, followed by a comprehensive tour in late 2010.
