Review of "The Sideman Speaks" by Carla Aragón, TV Personality, Former NBC Affiliate News Anchor, Author. The gifts and creativity of a backup musician come front and center in “The Sideman Speaks”, a CD just released by John J. Vigil. Vigil, a drummer for more than 40 years, has written and composed a series of songs that could have shaped a generation. The music harkens back to the 60’s and 70’s when lyrics were profound and the instrumentation experimental and invigorating. Some of Vigil’s songs reflect the awkwardness and insecurity felt by young people finding their way (1974) ...or the peaks and valleys of an enduring love that is based on reality and not romance (Good Times). Vigil features some familiar tunes, like “Fool on the Hill,” arranged with a twist. The haunting but poignant song, “Daddy’s Come,” is based on the real life tragedy of a two-year-old boy killed by his stepfather. And as part of Vigil’s journey, the CD celebrates the spiritual grace and thanksgiving that comes from knowing God and being a Christian. Vigil is a master at words, but the music speaks for itself. Throughout his career, Vigil has compiled and composed a library of music. “The Sideman Speaks” does not rely on one style or genre - it mixes it up. You’ll hear country, mariachi, rock, alternative, jazz, and freestyle. Vigil seamlessly weaves complex and competing styles into song after song that stand on their own. “The Sideman Speaks” is not a CD to be played in the background. It is a piece of work that needs to be appreciated for its lyrics and musical creativity. Listen carefully and listen a lot. Many New Mexicans have seen John J. Vigil play from behind his wall of drums, but this original music by Vigil may be his biggest performance yet.
